The history of hookah dates back to a very long time. Since hookah first came on to the scene, different names which are associated to it over the period of time with Hubble- bubble, shisha, water pipe, nargeela being among the most common. It has usually been used to experience smooth tobacco smoking in the larger parts of Asia in particular the Middle East for many years now.
Hookah, originated from India, came to the Middle East where it began as a humble coconut shell. It was not until the 17th century when, in Turkey, it was developed into a real hookah and led to the foundation of coffee house life. Over the centuries hookah has become a symbol of lavish experience in smoke especially when people are in gathering and interacting with each other. This has been the main cause for its brisk growing rate and popularity in the western world.
Hookah is smoked by people of different ages on various occasions. Students smoke hookah at a gathering and have a chit chat about how the day went by. Women have sessions of hookah when they meet at one of the friend’s residence or in a café and have gossips about the latest happenings in the society. Men have their own periods of hookah when they meet up with their friends after a game or take time out from their busy schedules to have some fun time after the working hours of the weekdays or at the weekends. In some parts of the world, it is still a tradition to welcome a guest with hookah or flavored shisha which is considered a sign of good hospitality. As compared to cigarette smoking, which is deemed by many as a habit involving nervousness, hookah smoking is a very calm and quiet activity.
